Dual-Beam Spotlight: Combining Long-Range White Laser Illumination with 90° LED Floodlighting

One Compact Spotlight, Two Lighting Functions

Traditional spotlights often face a trade-off between long-distance illumination and wide-area lighting. A narrow beam can illuminate distant targets with high intensity, but it provides limited coverage at close range. A wide floodlight illuminates a large area, but its light is spread over a wider angle, reducing the intensity available for long-range illumination.

Our dual-beam spotlight concept combines a central LEP illumination module with a large optical lens and a surrounding ring of LED light sources. This integrated design delivers both long-range spot illumination and wide-angle floodlighting in a single compact lighting system.

1. Central White Laser Module for Long-Range Illumination

At the center of the spotlight is a high-brightness LEP illumination module paired with a large optical lens.

The lens focuses the output into a narrow beam, concentrating the available light to achieve high luminous intensity and illuminate distant targets.

The white laser beam features an adjustable beam angle from 1° to 30°, allowing users to switch between a tightly concentrated beam for maximum throw and a wider beam for increased target coverage.

Key advantages include:

  • Long-range performance: High luminous intensity supports illumination of distant objects.
  • Adjustable beam angle: Variable focusing from 1° to 30° adapts the light distribution to different operating distances and target sizes.
  • Compact optical design: A large central lens efficiently shapes the output without requiring a separate long optical assembly.

By concentrating light into a narrow beam, the white laser module helps users identify distant objects and observe details that may be difficult to see with conventional wide-angle lighting.

2. Surrounding LED Ring for 90° Floodlighting

Arranged around the central lens is a circular array of round LED light sources.

Unlike the adjustable white laser beam, the LED ring provides a fixed 90° wide-angle floodlight for close-range illumination and surrounding-area coverage.

Its main functions include:

  • Illuminating nearby objects and obstacles.
  • Providing broad coverage around the spotlight's forward direction.
  • Improving visibility during close-range operations.
  • Reducing the need for a separate floodlight.

The round LEDs are distributed evenly around the central optical assembly, creating a clean, symmetrical appearance while making efficient use of the available front surface.

This arrangement integrates two different lighting technologies into one housing while preserving their distinct optical functions.

3. Independent Beam Angles for Maximum Flexibility

An important feature of this design is that the two lighting systems have independent beam-angle characteristics.

The white laser module provides an adjustable beam angle of 1°–30°, while the LED ring maintains a fixed 90° floodlight angle.

These specifications describe two separate optical outputs, not a combined beam limited to 1°–30°.

Depending on the application, the lighting system can use the long-range white laser beam, the wide-angle LED floodlight, or both simultaneously, provided the electrical control system supports independent switching.

For example:

  • Long-range search: Use the white laser module at a narrow beam angle to illuminate distant targets.
  • Close-range inspection: Use the 90° LED floodlight to illuminate a wider area.
  • Combined operation: Activate both lighting systems to maintain distant target visibility while illuminating nearby surroundings.

This flexibility makes the spotlight suitable for situations where operators need to alternate between searching for distant objects and observing the immediate environment.

4. A Premium Mechanical and Thermal Design

To support professional applications, the spotlight can incorporate a compact cylindrical housing, an advanced adjustable mounting bracket, and a stable base.

The mounting structure allows the light to be aimed accurately while maintaining a premium, industrial appearance. Depending on the application, the mounting system can be adapted for vehicle installation, marine equipment, fixed security installations, or motorized positioning systems.

Thermal management is another important design consideration. The LEP module and LED ring generate heat during operation, so the housing should provide appropriate heat-transfer paths and sufficient cooling capacity for the intended power level and duty cycle.

The internal architecture can integrate the optical module, LEDs, driver electronics, heat-dissipation structure, and mechanical mounting components into a unified assembly.

The final configuration can be customized according to the required output, dimensions, environmental protection, input voltage, and control interface.

5. Potential Applications

This dual-beam architecture is particularly useful when both long-range visibility and close-range coverage are required.

Marine searchlights: Identify distant vessels, floating objects, and navigation hazards while illuminating nearby deck areas.

Vehicle-mounted lighting: Search for distant targets while maintaining broad illumination around the vehicle.

Aircraft and helicopter lighting: Support long-range observation and near-field illumination, subject to aircraft integration, weight, vibration, thermal, and certification requirements.

Security and surveillance: Illuminate distant areas while retaining visibility of the immediate surroundings.

Industrial inspection: Combine concentrated illumination for distant inspection points with floodlighting for nearby equipment and working areas.

Conclusion: Two Lighting Functions in One Integrated System

The dual-beam spotlight combines the long-range intensity of an LEP module with the wide-area coverage of a circular LED ring.

The central LEP white laser beam offers adjustable focusing from 1° to 30°, while the surrounding LED ring provides a fixed 90° floodlight. Each serves a different purpose, and both can be used independently or simultaneously when supported by the control system.

Rather than forcing one light source to handle every lighting task, this approach assigns each function to the technology best suited to it.

The result is a compact, versatile spotlight concept designed to illuminate distant targets and nearby surroundings within one integrated lighting platform.
